same thing happening with me, except mine is capping at 60, if it's capping at 158, then it can't be v-sync
v sync depends on monitor hertz i think
it doesnt cap at 60 but at your monitor hz
at 144 hz its possible to cap at 158

but i have v-sync turned off in valorant and nvidia settings, so i have no idea what's causing my cap
Chances are it can be capped in your config valorant files

nup, v-sync is off in them too
Press windows r, in the box paste this : %LOCALAPPDATA%
Search for valorant and press it => then press saved => then press config
There you will see 2-3 files named as 05290851xcc1jo4c0
If you have 3 accounts you will see 3 folders, if you have 1 you will see 1 folder, press the folder => press windows => open GameUserSettings
There then search for FrameRateLimit and make sure its 0.0000

In valorant, is your settings capped to , like when you go to settings then in Video, at the first page at bottom do you see this " Limit Fps always "

In nvidia settings, does your valorant have "max fps" set to smth

Sometimes GLOBAL settings arent ALWAYS applied to valorant, So maybe try going the the pr ogram settings beside it, and the choose valorant, check if there its max fps is set to global or at a limit.

ok, the wierdest thing is happening, whenever valorant is in the background, the fps starts climbing, but then it slowly drops back to 60 once i open it
Can you try to switch to windowed mode and see if at windowed mode also its capped?

other things still run at 144fps when valorant is open
If thats the thing, it might be fullscreen problem, If your val orant is open, in task manager, right click its exe, your valorant isnt open, find its exe and right click it, go to properties and disable Full screen optimizations, lemme know if that works
when its running and i right click it in task manager, it wont let me see the properties, but when it's closed i can't find it
Can you press windows key and search valorant if that pops up?
How do you open valorant? You open it from the VALORANT app shortcut or from RIOT launcher

my windows refresh rate settings are also set to 144hz
on valorant is it set to 144 hz or 60 hz

144 hz monitor people have 2 options sometimes, as 60 hz and one as a 144 hz profile.

sorry, i had to go do something, yes, my other games also have fps capped at 60, and my fps is still capped at 60 when i change the resolution
